The song was written by Kadison, and produced by Peter Van Hooke and Rod Argent. It did not become a hit in continental Europe until 1994 and in the United Kingdom until 1995. "Jessie" became a top-10 hit in Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands. In the United States, it peaked at number 26 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts. The accompanying music video was directed by Piers Plowden, depicting Kadison playing on a piano in a desert landscape.
